Being a THON™ Captain is one of the most rewarding and impactful leadership roles within THON. From planning logistics to supporting our families, captains play a vital role in uniting volunteers and making THON’s mission a reality. Captains not only provide structure and direction but also help create the supportive, spirited culture that defines THON. The opening of fall captain applications is just around the corner, so we’ve compiled some of the most common questions to help you better understand what it means to be a THON captain.

Q: What does a THON captain do?

A: Captains serve as leaders within their respective committees. They act as mentors for committee members, plan and execute projects throughout the year, and work closely with other captains and directors to keep the year running smoothly.

Q: How do you become a captain?

A: There are two rounds of captain applications- one in the spring and one in the fall. Every application process consists of a written application and interviews. Candidates are selected based on leadership skills, dedication, and passion for THON’s mission. It does not matter if you are selected to be a captain in the spring or in the fall, as each semester may provide different roles and it ultimately depends on what time is best for you to apply!

Q: Do all captains have committees?

A: Not every captain oversees a committee. There are many positions that are more specialized on specific projects or areas within THON such as Technology, Finance, or Communications. Whether or not a captain has a committee, every captain plays an essential role in making THON successful.

Q: What is the time commitment like?

A: Being a captain is a yearlong role that requires dedication and organization. From weekly meetings to event preparation, captains invest significant time and energy. However, the reward comes in the form of meaningful connections, personal and professional growth, and seeing the impact of their work on THON Weekend.

Q: What makes being a captain unique?

A: Captains take on additional responsibilities that go beyond those of committee members. They serve as a direct resource for volunteers and gain hands-on leadership experience while contributing to the success of the largest student-run philanthropy in the world. Being a captain also gives you the opportunity to work closely with others who are just as passionate about THON’s mission.

Q: When is my next chance to apply to be a THON 2026 Captain?

A: Fall captain applications open today, August 18th! Visit think.thon.org to begin your application process. This is your chance to take on a leadership role and help make THON possible For The Kids®!

THON Captains provide leadership, structure, and inspiration to all involved with THON. Their work behind the scenes helps make THON possible year after year.
