This year, we celebrate 50 years of partnership between THON™ and Four Diamonds, our sole beneficiary. For THON Executive Director Lauren Mellas, this milestone offers the THON community an opportunity to do two things: celebrate how far the fight against childhood cancer has come and look at what this amazing partnership can bring in the future.
“We get to celebrate the past 50 years and all the progress we’ve made,” Mellas said. She highlighted survival rates for childhood cancer, which have risen from roughly 63% in 1977 to 83% today. “We have come such a long way in 50 years.”
A Partnership that has Grown with Kids at the Core
Mellas said the children have always been at the heart of the relationship, but almost everything around them has scaled up. In 1977, she explained, around 70 to 80 dancers took the physical stand against childhood cancer. Today, more than 700 dancers take that physical challenge against childhood cancer in the Bryce Jordan Center. THON’s volunteer impact has grown, and so has Four Diamonds.
This partnership has improved so much thanks to the two organizations working so closely together. Mellas said a priority this year is showing the full picture of where THON’s money goes. She described it as a funnel. THON raises money for Four Diamonds, and Four Diamonds works with Penn State Health Golisano Children’s Hospital. “It’s really this bigger web than anyone thinks when they first look at the two,” Mellas said.

Honoring Tradition While Challenging It
THON deeply values its traditions, but Mellas said “challenge tradition” is a phrase she believes in, too. For her, honoring the past means finding new ways to show the impact. Four Diamonds’ work goes far beyond covering medical bills. It includes the impact that child life specialists, social workers and music and art therapy have on families. This year’s anniversary is “a unique opportunity to showcase how we work together in the fight and how we’re partners in the fight,” Mellas said.

Inspiring Moments that Left a Mark
Mellas said the partnership “clicked” for her during a tour of the hospital’s outpatient cancer unit, where photos of THON throughout the years lined the walls. “It was an aha moment of, wow, we’re really in this together, and they are so appreciative of the work that we do,” Mellas said.
Mellas also highlighted milestones the THON community has made together: passing $1 million and $10 million and THON Weekend moving to the Bryce Jordan Center.
What First-Time Volunteers Should Know
Mellas has two messages for students who are new to THON. The first being how impactful the work is beyond its financial aspect. THON is a support system for the Four Diamonds children and families who go through these journeys. For Mellas, THON and Four Diamonds together “give these families a hug.”
Second, to remember that small gestures matter. “You never know how small a gesture can have such a huge impact on someone’s life,” Mellas said. A smile at the THON 5K, at Family Carnival, or during THON Weekend “can genuinely change their outlook.” These personal connections and small acts of support “can go a really long way,” Mellas said.

Dreaming Forward
As the THON community and Four Diamonds families celebrate this milestone year, Mellas is inspired to look ahead. “I’m excited to celebrate what comes after,” Mellas said. “One day, we will be able to dance in celebration of a cure.”
As THON looks ahead, Dream Forward has already taken off. From the THON 5K on Oct. 25 to 100 Days ’Til THON on Nov. 11, the THON community aims to raise $1.5 million For The Kids®. For Mellas, the goal now is to work toward something bigger. “I know that it’s possible to dance in celebration of a cure because of the THON community,” Mellas said. “We’ve done all this amazing stuff in 50 years, but now what? What are we going to be able to do next?”

THON™ is able to donate 96 cents of every dollar raised to Four Diamonds at Penn State Health Golisano Children’s Hospital because of supporters like you. Your generosity creates moments of joy for Four Diamonds children and families and empowers our volunteers through year-round events, fundraisers and THON Weekend.
