One of the many ways that THON™ volunteers can dance is through applying as an Independent Dancer Couple (IDC). Independent dancer couples allow students who are not affiliated with a specific organization to have the opportunity to dance during THON Weekend and are chosen through a lottery system weighted by the amount of money that the partners raise together.
At the THON 5K powered by PNC, we had the chance to speak with Lili Fierro, a senior who is registered as an IDC while also volunteering as a member of the Communications Committee.
“I THON so kids can celebrate more birthdays, they can experience all the things that a lot of people take for granted. Everything we do is For The Kids®, and I think it’s great.”
Fierro has been involved with THON since her freshman year, starting as a Rules and Regulations Committee Member during her first two years, then continuing her journey as a Communications Committee Member for her junior and senior years. To end her time as a THON volunteer, she is working towards earning a spot for the 46-hour Dance Marathon in February.
“I wanted to further my involvement,” said Fierro, “I think dancing is something I have always wanted to do, so this is the perfect year to do it. For my last THON, it would be great to be able to be on the floor for the full 46 hours.”
Fierro is most looking forward to seeing her friends during THON Weekend. Her favorite part of THON Weekend is Family Hour because she loves seeing the impact of everyone’s efforts throughout the year.
To ensure that THON is able to donate 96 cents of every dollar raised to Four Diamonds at Penn State Health Children’s Hospital, we heavily rely on donor support. These donations provide us the resources to create endless memories for our Four Diamonds families & foster a deep love & connection to our mission for our volunteers through Pre-THON Events, alternative fundraisers, & THON Weekend.
