Special Events Director

Robert Kerner

  • Year: Senior
  • Hometown: Erie, PA
  • Major: Bio-behavioral Health
  • Why did you want to be a Director?: My previous 3 years of THON involvement have shown me just how indescribable of an impact this organization leaves on our Four Diamonds Families, volunteers, and the Penn State community. Seeing how the Penn State student body rallies together to serve a unified mission has sparked a passion for service that has driven me to dedicate more of myself to serving this cause. I wanted to be a Director to focus my energy on making an impact on THON that will enhance the way that we support our families while simultaneously inspiring the next generations of selfless leaders who will continue to help THON grow and thrive for years to come.
  • What responsibilities do you have as the [position] Director for THON 2025?: As the Special Events Director, I oversee the planning, logistics, and execution of all pre-THON events, such as the THON 5K powered by PNC, 100 Days ‘Til THON Celebration, Family Carnival, THON Athletic Events, THON Showcase, No Hair Don’t Care, and more. The Special Events Committee is committed to ensuring that the magic and excitement of THON is felt year-round by creating events to spark lifelong memories for Four Diamonds families, organizations, volunteers, and the entire THON community.
  • What is your favorite THON memory?: My favorite THON memory to date is the total reveal from THON Weekend 2024. Being able to stand side-by-side with my co-captains, our families, and thousands of other dedicated volunteers during such a monumental moment for our cause was one of the most surreal and emotional moments of my life.
  • Favorite Quote: “I shall pass through this world but once. Any good, therefore, that I can do or any kindness I can show to any human being, let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.” – Stephen Grellet
  • What are you involved in outside of THON?: Camp Sweeney Associate Program Director. Water, Health, and Nutrition Lab Undergraduate Research Assistant.
  • What are your plans for after you graduate from Penn State?: I plan to attend medical school and specialize in pediatric endocrinology or ophthalmology.

To ensure that THON is able to donate 96 cents of every dollar raised to Four Diamonds at Penn State Health Children’s Hospital, we heavily rely on donor support. These donations provide us the resources to create endless memories for our Four Diamonds families & foster a deep love & connection to our mission for our volunteers through Pre-THON Events, alternative fundraisers, & THON Weekend.
