Message from the Overall Chair

Hello! My name is Kirsten Kelly and I am honored to serve as the Overall Chair for the 2011 Penn State Dance Marathon. It is a privilege to work with THON volunteers, student organizations, families, alumni, donors, supporters and the University to make THON 2011 the best yet. It takes the unified efforts of these groups to truly make THON successful and I thank you for the role you play in our fight against pediatric cancer!
In 1973, 39 couples danced for 30 hours in the HUB Student Union ballroom, Their efforts raised $2000 and marked the first dance marathon. Today, THON is a yearlong fundraising effort that culminates in a 46-hour no-sitting, no-sleeping dance marathon in February in the Bryce Jordan Center. THON is a part of Penn State culture and engages 15,000 students in efforts to provide outstanding emotional and financial support to families battling pediatric cancer. To date, THON has raised more than $69 million For The Kids!
The Four Diamonds Fund is the sole beneficiary of THON. By picking up where insurance leaves off, the Fund relieves the financial burden on families whose children are undergoing treatment. THON began its partnership with the Four Diamonds Fund in 1977 and its support makes excellent care for the families possible. The Fund hires world-class medical specialists as part of its cancer fighting team: oncologists, child life specialists and a clinical nutritionist. The Four Diamonds Fund also plays an important role in finding a cure for cancer. It has established several research endowments and recent developments indicate that a cure is in sight!
THON brings together people across the commonwealth and across the country to raise awareness and funds For The Kids. This fight is not over yet, but with your help we will make the difference in the life of a child and find a cure for cancer. With your help, we will dance in celebration!
For The Kids, For Their Futures,
Kirsten Kelly
